About This Item

Middlesex, England: Penguin Books, 1987. Paperback. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6?" - 7?" tall. Penguin Paperback in Good Condition. Clean and bright pictorial wraps with illustration of Charles II by Samuel Cooper, gently used, light wear to front corners, soundly bound. Internals clean and free from any markings, no creases, lightly toned. The seventeenth century in England was a period of unprecedented growth--when it opened England was a comparatively poor nation on the fringes of Europe; when it closed she was one of the major powers. There had been civil war and major rebellion to overcome, but her civil institutions and structure were strengthened and parliament grew to something like the current structure. It was the century of the brilliant philosophers Hobbes and Locke and scientists led by Newton were reappraising the way the physical world was viewed. An exciting century. This volume is the history of that time. 383 pages with Bibliography and Index. 4.4 x 7 inches. Penguin Books, Middlesex, England, 1987 Printing. First Published 1978, Second Edition first published 1985. This is the first reprinting of the second edition.
