The history of the Smoky Mountains -including that of the "first half billion years" and of the modern era - the creation of the park, the influence of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the Rockefellers, hiking, moonshiners and bootleggers, Appalachian ballads and the Appalachian trail. Very warmly and personally INSCRIBED by the author on the half title page (to a Pan Am pilot - one who joined Pan Am in 1930! - with a reference to logging "more than a few hours in the high places over the world" and dated in 1969. Maps by Stephen Kraft. Contains a camping and hiking appendix, bibliography and notes, index. 394 pp. Full color wildflower photographs on the endpapers.
