About This Item
London: Fourth Estate, 2009. 1st ed.. Paperback octavo, very good condition, minor edgewear. 344 pp. Francis Wheen provides an hilarious and jaw-dropping chronicle of the 1970s, golden age of the paranoid style. The 1970s evokes memories of Abba and Fawlty Towers, but it was really a theme park of mass paranoia on the verge of a collective nervous breakdown, huddled over candles waiting for the next terrorist bomb, kidnapping or food shortage warning. Whether it was Nixon's demented behaviour in the White House, Idi Amin, Harold Wilson's insistence that 'they' were out to get him, or the trial of Rupert Bear, it is a story too fantastic to be true. With his acute sense of the absurd he exposes the sickly decade in which nations were brought to a halt by power cuts, military coups, economic anarchy and the arrival of Uri Geller.
