About This Item
FRANK, Robert. Storylines. (Göttingen, Germany): Steidl, (2004). First edition. Oblong quarto, original flexible photographic wrappers. In original shrinkwrap -Never opened.
First edition, commemorating the first major exhibit of Frank's work in Britain, a rare association copy warmly inscribed on the half title by Frank to award-winning photojournalist Peter Turnley, "For Peter Turnley [drawing of arrow pointing right], good luck on the road, Mpl. April 15.06, Robert Frank," with over 150 images, in black-and-white and color, many appearing in book form for the first time.
Published on the occasion of Robert Frank's first monographic exhibit in Britain, at the time of his eightieth birthday, "Storylines is not a retrospective in the usual sense… It is something much more poetic and elegiac, and as complicated as life itself" (Guardian). As in earlier works such as The Lines of My Hand (1972), Storylines reaffirms that this is a photographer who "doesn't make conventional monographs. Everything Frank does is a diary, a confession" (Parr & Badger I:261). Storylines includes photographs taken in Paris, Peru, London, Wales and America, from the 1940s to the 70s, along with several Polaroid sequences, including Memory for the Children, as well as images from Black White and Things (1952) and various films, including Conversations in Vermont (1969)-many published here in book form for the first time. First edition, published in conjunction with the exhibit "Robert Frank: Storylines" at London's Tate Modern, October 28, 2004-January 3, 2005. Foreword by Vincent Todolí, director of the Tate Modern. This copy from the private collection of renowned photojournalist Peter Turnley, inscribed by Frank to Turnley in Minneapolis, April 2006. As a featured photographer for Newsweek and contributing editor for Harper's Magazine, Turnley has covered "almost every important international news event of the last 15 years" (New York Times).
A fine, never opened copy, extremely rare, as such.
