About This Item
New York: The New Home Library, 1942. September 1942 Edition . Hard Back. Very Good/Very Good. 5 1/2" X 8 1/4. 429 Pages. The copyright is date 1928. This is the September 1942 New Home Library edition. Green boards with red page edges and impressed decoration on the front board. Here at last is a book that flings open the treasury of Eastern philosophy as Will Durant's book did for the philosophy of the Western world. In the pages of this book, Buddha, Confucius, Lao Tsii, Shankara, Mencius, Pantanjali become living figures of heroic stature-human beings who lived and loved, strove and suffered in a world not wholly unlike our own, and at a great price wrested their wisdom from life. Here, too, are unfolded the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, the Song Celestial of India; the mysteries of the Vedanta; the age-encrusted lore of Tibet, the five classic books of China; the Sufi philosophy of Persia, which saw its flowering in the Rubaiyat. The value of the thought of Asia is daily more realized by Western thinkers. The demand for knowledge of its riches grows more and more insistent. The values of East and West do not clash. They are supplementary and interchangeable, and it will be well for the world when this is fully realized and there is free circulation of thought. For the faith of a nation, like that of an individual, is her soul. And nations which do not meet on this ground cannot understand one another.
