About This Item

Boston: Cupples, Upham and Company, 1883. Hardcover. G- (Outer covering is slightly wrinkled and soiled; front hinge is broken inside at tp; pages have aged only slightly'; former owner name on first flyleaf.). Gray cloth, gilt letters on spine & front cover, gilt decoration, 84 pp., 1 BW illus. as frontispiece. American illustrator and author Esther Francesca "Fanny" Alexander (1837-1917) became a confidant of John Ruskin while she was living in Florence in 1882. The fact that he edited this book so quickly after their first introduction, speaks of his high regard for her abilities. He shortly thereafter purchased the 122 drawings that she had prepared for Roadside Songs of Tuscany.
