About This Item

London, England: Nobody/Archive Of Modern Conflict, 2005. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. London, England: Nobody/Archive Of Modern Conflict, 2005. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the greatest photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 1500 copies. Published simultaneously with the Deluxe Edition. Both editions are now rare. A brilliant production by Stephen Gill and Melanie Mues: Regular-sized volume format. Blue pictorial cloth boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and brief text by Stephen Gill. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Stephen Gill's "Hackney Wick". Still his best, iconic book, from which all of his subsequent, ground-breaking (as it were) work derives. "I first came across the area in January 2003 when I was photographing the back of advertising billboards. Although I had lived in London for nine years and thought I knew East London well, Hackney Wick threw me. It completely changed my mental map of this part of London. Over the next two years (2003 through 2005), I visited Hackney Wick again and again. Hackney has long provided a refuge for immigrants and asylum-seekers from all over the world and for me, Hackney Wick especially reflects the great diversity of London" (Stephen Gill). To capture its distinctive flavor, ambience, and human face, Gill used a "low-tech" camera, in a defiant gesture of resistance to the pervasive (and soul-less) "hi-tech" digital camera favored by professional as well as amateur photographers. A pitch-perfect, poignant realization of the "object-in-relation-to-place" motif that runs throughout Stephen Gill's work. An absolute "must-have" title for Stephen Gill collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition of 1500 copies. It is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen on the front pastedown by Stephen Gill. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The signature beautifully matches the book's blue-dominant boards. This title is a great photography book. This is one of few such signed copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Stephen Gill did NOT sign most copies of the Limited Edition. A rare signed copy thus. 100 color plates. Stephen Gill's "Hackney Wick" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy.
