About This Item

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1984. First Printing [Stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Wendell Minor. 349, [3] pages. Illustrations. Index. Signed by author with sentiment on fep. Name of previous owner on fep. Robert Watts Creamer (July 14, 1922 - July 18, 2012) was an American sportswriter and editor. He spent most of his career at Sports Illustrated. Creamer was one of the first hired on the staff of Sports Illustrated in 1954. He served the magazine as a senior editor from inception to 1984, and wrote the weekly Scorecard section of the magazine. He also wrote for The New York Times. As an author, Creamer wrote what many consider the definitive biography of Babe Ruth, titled Babe: The Legend Comes to Life, in 1974. Creamer wrote seven other baseball related books, including biographies of Mickey Mantle, Casey Stengel, Ralph Houk, the sportscaster Red Barber and the umpire Jocko Conlan. He also wrote Baseball in '41: A Celebration of the "Best Baseball Season Ever" . In retirement, Creamer occasionally wrote retrospective articles for Sports Illustrated and could be seen on television commenting on historical moments in sports, many of which he had covered. Creamer was a recipient of the 2012 Henry Chadwick Award from the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). Charles Dillon "Casey" Stengel (July 30, 1890 - September 29, 1975) was an American Major League Baseball right fielder and manager best known as the manager of both the championship New York Yankees of the 1950s, and later of the expansion New York Mets. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. Stengel began in 1910 a professional baseball career that would span over half a century. Stengel reached the major leagues as an outfielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers. His six seasons there saw some success. With the Giants he learned much about baseball from the manage. His major league playing career ended, and he then began a career as a manager. Yankee general manager Weiss hired him as manager in 1948. Stengel's Yankees won the World Series five consecutive times (1949-1953). He was dismissed by the Yankees. The Mets finished last all the years he managed them.
