About This Item
Collins, London, 1974. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: photographic. slight rubbing of the top corners of the dustjacket, with a half inch tear at the top left of the front panel, and a slightly smaller one at the bottom right of the same. Price clipping of the dustjacket. No other damage to describe. The top edge of the textblock was tinted a brown by the publisher. Who was Stanley? Why he claim at different times American and British birth? What was his real name? And why was he so desperately untruthful about these and other personal details? Here at last in a brilliant piece of research and a no less brilliant piece of storytelling the true lineaments of the man are uncovered from the repeated over paintings and my machines which he applied to his own self-portrait. The new material Mr Hall has found about the 2nd African journey provides fresh and independent evidence of the unbelievable hardships and tear is that had to be overcome. The book is illustrated with end page maps, and a number of reproductions of drawings, as well as black-and-white photographs throughout the text. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 400 pages.
