About This Item

London: William Heinemann, 1932. First edition. Cloth. Good. 7.5" by 5" . None . The first edition, second state as common, of this famous novel by Graham Greene, published in the US as 'Orient Express.' The first edition, second issue with Savoury referred to as Mr. Quin Savory rather than 'Q. C. Savory' on pages 77, 78, 82, 98, and 131. After reading a review copy, J. B. Priestly became convinced that the the pompous and self regarded character of Savory was based on himself, and threatened a libel suit and to leave Heinemann. Changes were hence made. The first issue is indeed rarely seen as only few copies of the uncorrected text were circulated and even less survive today. This work was Greene's first true success, set on a train journey from Ostend to Istanbul. The book was printed in the US as Orient Express, and made into a film bearing the same name, directed by Paul Martin and starring Heather Angel, Norman Foster, and Ralph Morgan. In a library full cloth binding. In a library full cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, general rubbing to the boards and spine, fading to the spine. Evidence of the attempted removal of library stickers to the front pastedown. Professional tape repairing to the inner gutter of the title page. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to the fore edge, affecting only the occasional page, otherwise the pages are generally bright and clean throughout. Good
