About This Item

New York, NY: W. W. Norton & Company, 1998. First edition. First Edition [stated]. First printing [stated]. Hardcover. Very good in very good dust jacket. Minor endpaper soiling noted. DJ has slight wear and soiling.. Sewn binding. Cloth over boards. xii, 371, [1] p. Index. Robert Russell Garwood (born 1 April 1946 in Greensburg, Indiana) is a controversial former Vietnam War prisoner of war (POW). Garwood was a United States Marine Corps Private First Class[when he was captured on September 28, 1965 at Da Nang. Often cited as the last verified American POW from the Vietnam War, Garwood was taken to North Vietnam in 1969, and reportedly was released in 1973 along with the other American POWs. However, he did not return to the United States until March 22, 1979. From the dust jacket: ""In 1965 Marine Robert Garwood, ten days short of the end of his tour, was sent on a mission from which he did not return. Ambushed by the Vietcong, he was held prisoner by the Vietcong for 14 yrs. In 1979 he escaped and returned to the U. S., where he was hastily court-martialed and convicted of collaborating with the enemy. Now at last we learn Garwood's story: a 14-year struggle to survive and prevail."
