About This Item
UK: Faber, 1972 First paperback edition 1972 of the Faber 1969 hardcover. Light wear to cover and heavy wear to spine, side of front cover is starting to curve up. The good quality Faber paper and binding of the text are holding up beautifully. This is a collection of essays, poems, letters and various bits about travel, primarily in Greece and Provence, in Durrell's inimitable style. This is not a Fodor publication: "Across Secret Provence," for example, is about travels with a trader in fighting bulls who has a map of his beloved country tattooed across his chest; "Down the Styx," a six page letter to an aunt, is, as you may have feared, a sort of guide to how to take this journey: "Make the ritual offering of rice and, as if by magic, the enigmatic boat appears from the depths. Step into it firmly, holding the cherry-wood crucifix." . Spirit of Place, as promised!

About Sparkle Books
I search out used books on principle to highlight their value, keep them circulating and out of the landfill (and just because I am compelled to tell people to "read this"!)
