Based on the 1951 novel by Howard Fast, a fictionalized account of a slave revolt against the Roman Empire. Along with Otto Preminger's "Exodus" the same year, the first screenwriting credit for Dalton Trumbo under his own name since he was blacklisted in 1950, effectively ending the practice in Hollywood. Nominated for six Academy Awards, winning four, including Best Supporting Actor for Peter Ustinov.
