Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1945. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Good. Illustrator: Catherine Milhous. Illustrated end pages, showing a map of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 1755. The text is illustrated with colour and black-and-white illustrations by the author. Beige coloured cloth covered boards with green coloured illustration to the front panel and green coloured titles to the back strip. Colour illustrated dustwrapper (wraparound), again by the author, with dark green and black coloured titles to the front panel and white coloured titles to the back strip. In the middle part of the 18th century the children of a Moravian settlement at Nazareth Pennsylvania, was sent to Bethlehem for their protection against attacks by indigenous people. Quoting from the front fold over panel blurb " ... Here is the story, told to children, of how Bethlehem was given its name; of the Christmas crib made for the children behind barricaded windows; of the Indian attack turned aside by the music of the Christmas trombones." Rubbing of the book edges with tanning of the text block edges and age toning of the pages. A little chipping of the dustwrapper corners, with the top right hand corner of the front panel missing. Chipping to the top back strip edge. There is 1/2 inch tear to the top edge of the front panel and rubbing to the lower right-hand corner of the same panel. Sunning to the back strip.
