About This Item

Self, 1889. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. Sketches of Frontier and Indian Life on the Upper Missouri and Great Plains. Embracing the Author's Personal Recollections of Noted Frontier Characters, and some Observations of Wild Indian Life during a Twenty-Five Years' Residence in the Two Dakotas and other Territories, Between the Years 1864 and 1889." Howes T-68, Graff 4091. Pottstown, PA: Scarce: self-published by the Author and printed in a small quantity on a hand press, 1889. 1st edition. 200 pp. The Contents lists 21 illustrations, of which 2 are not found (Painted Woods Lake, and The Eagles). 5.25" x 8". There are three illustrations present that are not listed in the Contents (Aricaree Women and Children, White Chief North's Arapahoe Renegades Attack A Train, and Crow Flies High). And there are 19 illustrations that are listed in the Contents and present in the text (Son of the Star, Joseph Taylor, To the Land of Deseret, Distant View of Black Hills, Aricaree Hunting Lodge, Cheyenne On Their Way to Berthold, John Grass, Spirit Lake Massacre, Crossing Over the Ratoon, Assinaboines Moving (Abduction of Trader's Wife), Joseph Deitrich, Charley Reynolds, Lake Mandan, Old Timers, Dan Williams, Chief Joseph, New Timers, James Gayton, Longfeather). There are a total of 22 illustrations in the text. Original quarter bound calf leather over marbled boards. Marbled paper over the boards is chipped and worn. Front board detached. Approximately 1.5 inches of upper leather spine missing; gilt title and author name intact. Small bookplate to inside front board, along with the same owner's hand written name. Older previous owners name in faded ink in a fine hand to front free endpaper: "Thomas G Peirson's Book". Other than front board, binding is solid. Leaves are toned, but supple. Some minor scattered foxing. This is a scarce and important US western frontier narrative, priced to reflect the listed condition issues.
