New York: The Macmillan Company, 1931. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Near Fine/Very Good. Myna and Lewis Browne. Small 4to. Pp. xiii, 443. With decorations and maps by Lewis and Myna Browne. Index. Bound in maroon cloth with gilt cross and lettering on front board and spine. In the illustrated dust jacket, printed in art-deco gilt, black and red, but presenting the crucifixion, skulls and darkness. Light edge-wear. Price of $3.50 intact. Inscription in ink begins, "For my dear friend Paul Jordan Smith ... ." Jordan-Smith was the American lecturer and scholar of English literature whose art movement, "Disumbrationism," was eventually revealed as a hoax. Wilbur Jordan Smith, his son, ran UCLA Special Collections from 1950s-1970 or so. The dust jacket, illustrated by one of the Brownes, is now preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.
