About This Item
1944 A typed letter on an 8-1/2" by 11" sheet of paper, on New York Mirror Daily and Sunday Letterhead, with the penned signature of Walter Winchell, expressing warm thanks "for a most interesting letter". Dated Feb. 29, 1944, and addressed to Mrs. Talley, being Manila Davis Talley [1898-1973] the first woman from West Virginia to earn a pilot's license, who also earned a commercial pilot's license whilst working for Curtiss-Wright Corporation. She was an aircraft racing pilot and joined the 99s in 1930. Talley was a founding member of the Betsy Ross Air Corps, a private female auxiliary for the Army Air Corps in 1931. In 1933 she married Colonel B. B. Talley [Benjamin B.], the Father of Military Construction in Alaska. Walter Winchell (1897-1972) began his career at the New York Mirror on June 10, 1929, where he became the author of the first syndicated Gossip Column, and was one of the first commentators in America to attack Adolf Hitler, and the pro-Nazi organizations such as the German-American Bund. The letter has two staple holes on the right side.
