London: The Porcupine Press, 1949. Cloth. Very Good/Good. Bound in blue cloth, with DW,b/w frontis portrait, " Joseph Arch ", 13 b/w plates, 256pp. The history of the Farm Workers Union. In 1830 farm labourers in Hampshire had demonstrated for a wage increase and during their demonstration had escorted a few brutal Poor Law Overseers out of their villages. For gathering together to ask for bread and for workthey were jailed, loaded with chains and transported to the penal colony in Australia. Some were hanged such as Henry Cook who during the demonstration had knocked off the hat of a landowner. In 1833 a union of farm labourers was formed in Tolpuddle in Dorset. In 1834 the leading Tolpuddle trade unionists were arrested and six ringleaders were again transported to Australia. Next we read of Joseph Arch who formed the first national union of farm workers in 1972. By the time this book was written the union spoke for 200,000 land workers.
