About This Item
London: Sampson Low, Marston & Company, 1900. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. The first English edition. As described in BAL 7935, the English edition consists of the American sheets with a canceled title page naming Low as the publisher. Significant wear to the illustrated boards (see photos). Top edge gilt, 5 plates. Previous owner's bookplate to the front fixed endpaper, with a clipped review of the work from "The Daily News", October 22, 1900 of "Shadowings" affixed to the second fly leaf, mostly concerned with attributing Hearn's gothic sensibilities to an unhappy childhood.
Synopsis
This a collection of Japanese folk tales about the supernatural, gleaned by Lafcadio Hearn during his life in Japan. At least one of these stories (the reconciliation) featured in the 1960's classic Japanese movie 'Kwaidan' (pronounced 'Kai-dan in modern Japanese).
