Boston, MA: Little, Brown, and Company, 1900. First edition . Hardcover. A collection of six strange Japanese stories, three essays on Japanese studies, and seven essays on what seem to be personal experiences and insights. Bound in dark blue cloth with stunning illustrations of lillies in lighter shades of blue to both covers and spine. Lettering in gilt. Upper page edges in gilt. Illustrated bookplate of the University of Nevada library special collections of Gloria Grace Griffen Western American Collection neatly placed on the front paste-down endpaper. Griffen was a noted historian nominated for the Pulitzer Price. Leading and bottom edges left untrimmed. A near fine beautiful copy.
Synopsis
This a collection of Japanese folk tales about the supernatural, gleaned by Lafcadio Hearn during his life in Japan. At least one of these stories (the reconciliation) featured in the 1960's classic Japanese movie 'Kwaidan' (pronounced 'Kai-dan in modern Japanese).
