About This Item

Chicago: The Reilly & Lee Co, 1938. Hardcover. 8vo. Blue cloth with black lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 238pp. Very good/very good. Faintest of binding edgewear only, with slim, neat blue cloth tape inner hinge reinforcements that closely match binding color; jacket complete and attractive but edgeworn, with tiny chips at corners and at spine head/tail. Handsome first edition of the penultimate title in the 22-volume "Mystery Story for Boys" series, here involving two boys on a homestead in Alaska's remote Matanuska Valley. Snell boldly signs the front flyleaf in full in black fineline, adding "Sincerely" above. Snell (1878-1959) was a prolific author of young adult fiction. Interestingly, laid into this copy is a scarce 4pp heavy stock 3½" X 5" leaflet with Snell's portrait on the front advertising his three series: this series and also "Mystery Stories for Girls" and "The Radio Phone Boys' Series." Another panel gives Snell's bio and the remaining two list all titles in these three series. Since the "Mystery Stories for Boys" list only goes up through its tenth title ("Forbidden Cargoes"), published in 1927, that dates this leaflet.
