About This Item

Grosset and Dunlap, 1941-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good. Hardcover, (Photoplay Edition) 1941 reissue (timed for the opening of the film) Grosset & Dunlap 292 pages. Very Good+, in a VG DJ. Light green cloth boards with dark green titles - one corner lightly bumped. Minor shelf/edge wear and some rubbing to unclipped DJ - now in mylar. Previous owner name on FFEP. All pages are evenly toned. First photoplay edition of the 1941 Warner Brothers film, for which Gary Cooper was awarded an Oscar for his portrayal of a Tennessee pacifist drafted into WWI who becomes a reluctant hero. The jacket features a picture of Gary Cooper as York and gives the title as just Sergeant York, but the title page and front boards correctly state Sergeant York and His People. York originally believed in the morality of America's intervention in World War I. By the mid-1930s, he looked back more critically: "I can't see that we did any good. There's as much trouble now as there was when we were over there. I think the slogan 'A war to end war.' is all wrong." He fully endorsed American preparedness, but showed sympathy for isolationism by saying that he would fight only if war came to America. A very handsome collectible copy. LOC SSS-08
