About This Item
W. W. Norton & Company, 1978. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. Association copy. The inscription on the title page reads simply: "To Kay Ryan, May Sarton, April 1983." Ryan's first book was privately printed, read self-published, that same year ("It was the act of a desperate woman," she has said, "and it did me not a shred of good"). She would go on to become the U.S. Poet Laureate from 2008-2010 and won the Pulitzer in 2011 for her own new and selected poems, The Best of It. Sarton was a prolific writer and poet, who later in her career became widely recognized by critics as important and influential. She was lauded as a groundbreaking lesbian writer, and in this respect also help paved the way for Ryan. A year before she died, Sarton praised Ryans book Elephant Rocks: "Kay Ryan makes it all fresh again with her highly original vision, her elegant, quirky craft. These poems look easy, but the deeper one delves, the more they astonish and astound." A wonderful association, and a book in very good plus condition, with minor fading to its spine, lightly bumped corners, and a small black Sharpie mark in the upper right corner of the front cover. The wraps have a touch of curlinga book that has been read and appreciated. Please inquire for photos.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
