Med. 8vo; pp. [x], 462; marbled endpapers, illustrated facsimile title page, several illustrations in text, bound in original quarter brown leather with brown cloth boards, raised bands, title lettered in gilt on spine, gilt stamped decoration on spine and boards, all edges gilt, silk page marker, very good copy. A series of 48 biographies of famous men, arranged in pairs to illuminate their common moral virtues or failings, probably written at the beginning of the second century AD. Written by the Ancient Greek philosopher and translated by Dryden, with illustrations prepared for the English edition of 1676.
