New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo. Pp. [1-2], 3-264. Light foxing to endpapers, thumbing to a few leaves. Bound in dark blue cloth with silver lettering on spine. In the illustrated dust jacket that's price-clipped and shows light edge-wear. First edition of the author's first novel, begun after he left advertising after realizing "no reconciliation of serious writing with dog food was possible" (dust jacket copy). The dust jacket illustration, uncredited, presents a stylized Manhattan city block in arch art-deco style. Dust jacket now enclosed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
