About This Item
London: Macmillan & Co., 1889. New Edition (11th Thousand). Published by Macmillan & Co in London, 1889. This is a very good copy. Issued without a dust wrapper, the original publisher's black and gilt tooled cloth has some slight blemishing, a mild lean and some areas of separation along the guttering. The corners are bumped, as are the spine tips. The text blocks are toned, though free from foxing. The original illustrations are present, complete with the frontispiece and tissue guard. On the front fly leaf there is a small watercolour, showing a red and yellow flag with its pole. It is the signal flag for 'R', the recipient being named Reyna, whom the 1983 collection of 'Letters to Reyna' is dedicated. 'Reyna' is in fact Audrey Napier-Smith, the violinist and long-term correspondent of Masefield's. Overall, this is a fine association with a touching, well-thought and sentimental artwork. This is a very good copy.
