About This Item

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1898. Reprint. Hardcover. Very Good+. 8vo. [3], vi-xxxiv, [1], 2-419, [5] pp. Half black pebbled leather over marbled boards with gold lettering on the spine; top edge gilt. Written by an early advocate of Darwin's Theory of Evolution, Thomas Huxley, or the "Bulldog", was an accomplished scientist in his own right. Here Huxley discusses agnosticism, and his own personal views on Christianity. He defends himself from attacks lobbed at him by his critics, and also offers some scholarly criticism of the Bible. Some rubbing to the extremities, particularly to the corners, and a contemporary collector's tag on the front pastedown.
