Quarto (10 3/4 x 7 1/2"). 80, [4]pp. Striking contemporary Art Nouveau binding in full crushed morocco, signed by J. M. Romeo. Dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All paper edges gilt and marbled. Original decorative red wrappers bound in. Illustrated title in red lettering. Hand-colored decorative headpieces and tailpiece. Book housed in its original morocco lined marbled paper covered slipcase.
This striking first Catalan-language edition of Oscar Wilde's tragedy in one act "Salome" is splendidly illustrated throughout with 6 partly hand-colored headpieces, and one tailpiece by Catalan artist Adrià Gual.
"Salome" tells the Biblical story of Salome, stepdaughter of the tetrach Herod Antipas, who, to her stepfather's dismay but to the delight of her mother Herodias, requests the head of Jokanaan (John the Baptist) on a silver platter as a reward for dancing the dance of the seven veils.
Slipcase partly rubbed along edges. Binding with front cover partly discolored. Text in Catalan. Slipcase in overall good, binding in good- to good, interior in very good condition.
