About This Item
NY: Oxford Univ Pr, 1995. First. Hardcover. Yes. First printing. Cloth, 546 pps. Critically acclaimed, comprehensive biography of one of the pre-eminent men of 19th centruy America, Salmon P. Chase. Born in New Hampshire to a poor family and raised in Ohio, Chase became a leading voice in the abolitionist movement, Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (in which capacity he presided over the impeachment trial of Andrew Jackson) during the turmoil of Reconstruction. A detailed biography "from which emerges a portrait of a tragic figure whose high qualities of heart and mind and whose many achievments were ultimately tarnished by an often unseemly quest for power". Unfortunately Chase is most remembered (if at all) by Americans today as a trivia answer---his portrait appeared on the $10,000 bill. A fine, fresh copy in equally fine dust jacket.
