London: Longman, Brown, Green & Longmans. Very Good- with no dust jacket. 1842. First Edition Thus. 1. Leather. Publisher's full brown calf, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering on dark green leather label in one compartment, gilt tooling in remainder, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. Illustrated with over 50 B&W drawings by G. F. Sargent. William Howitt (1792-1879), was a prolific English writer on history and other subjects. William and his wife Mary also owned a school still used today; Howitt Primary School in Heanor, Derbyshire. In 1840 they went to Heidelberg, primarily for the education of their children, remaining in Germany for two years. In 1841 William Howitt produced, under the pseudonym of Dr Cornelius, "The Student Life of Germany," the first of a series of works on German social life and institutions, of which the instant volume is one. William Howitt wrote some fifty books, and his wife's publications, inclusive of translations, number over a hundred. . Spine is rubbed at head, front endpaper is torn with tape repair, former owner's printed bookplate on fep, shelf-wear to bottom edges, corners bumped, gilt on spine faded, else unmarked, tight, square and clean.
