Stage drama by Nobel Prize (1912) winning German dramatist Gerhart Hauptmann (1862 - 1946). This 5-act play, first performed 1903 in Berlin, was adapted to film (silent) first 1919, again in 1957 starring Maria Schell, and later to television. on. Set in a picturesque estate. But in this beautiful setting, gloomy fates lurk for the beguiling house maid Rose, as for the other residents --- all plagued by desires plunging them towards self destruction before the view of the audience doomed to watch the decline helplessly. A beautiful setting in sharp contrast against a background of extreme loneliness of a black and white, cold winter landscape.
