Paris: Librairie Hachette et Cie, c1905. Leather. Near Fine. 7" by 4.5". None. A lovely copy of this French-language novel. In a Relfe Brothers binding for Penistone Grammar School, with their name gilt stamped to the front board. Binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper. In the original French. Undated, dated using bookplate and Copac. Le Roi des Montagnes was first published in 1857. It follows a French botanist who has recently graduated being sent to Greece by the National Museum of Natural History to study flora. In search of rare plants he meets two English women and befriends them. All three are abducted by a band of brigands led by the king of the mountains, Hadgi-Stavros. In a full calf prize binding. Externally, very smart with minor bumping to the extremities. A small amount of light rubbing to the head and tail of spine. Prize bookplate to front pastedown for the Penistone Grammar School. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with occasional light spots, heavier to endpapers. Near Fine
