About This Item

New York: H.W. Wilson, 1928. 3rd ed. Hardcover. Very good with small personal owner name and minor edge-wear. Tight and clean. No jacket, (as issued?).. xxv, 390 pages, 26 unnumbered leaves of plates: illustrations (some color); 21 cm. Includes index. "Frederic Edward Clements (1874-1945) was an influential American ecologist, known primarily for his theory of plant succession. He was one of the first to propose that communities, such as forests or grasslands, go through a predictable series of stages of ecological succession. Clements viewed the community as a superorganism, a complex entity where the interactions between species are as important as the species themselves. He believed that communities develop in a predictable and orderly way, progressing through a series of stages (which he called "seres") from initial colonization to a final, stable "climax" community. This climax community, according to Clements, was determined by climate and soil conditions. His ideas were highly influential in the early development of ecology as a distinct scientific discipline. However, they have been largely superseded by more modern theories that emphasize the role of disturbances and stochastic events in shaping ecological communities, and the idea that there may be multiple possible climax communities rather than a single, predictable end point. Clements also made significant contributions to the field of plant physiology, and he was a pioneer in the use of experimental methods in plant ecology. Despite the controversy and debate surrounding his theories, his work continues to be influential in the field of ecology." / Plants -- Rocky Mountains -- Identification.
