About This Item

London England: Andre Deutsch Ltd/British Broadcasting Corporation. Near Fine/Very Good. 1984. First Edition. Cloth. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Tall Quarto 0233971483 Hardback Hardback. First Edition. The Rise and Fall of King Cotton. Very slight shelf wear to top edge of D/J. In words and pictures the author recaptures the excitement and trepidation of those early days of discovery, when invention followed invention, revolutionising cotton production and changing the lives of millions on three continents. His book paints a vivid picture of the lives of the British textile workers, wrenched from the relative freedom of cottage industry and subjected to the demands of factory and machine, and to life in the urban slums. Across the Atlantic the lot of the cotton picking slaves on the American plantations was no better; chained to their masters for ever. they had no prospect of relase other than death. The Lancashire mill and the Southern plantation were linked not only by economic ties but also in their fight to hold back the new Indian cotton industry, so it is ironic that today when the British cotton trade is in decline and the American industry much reduced, Indian cotton is flourighing. This book tells a fascinating story, enhanced by a wealth of historical illustrations never seen before, of an industry which was to set the pace for the whole process of industrialisation. Illustrated. 240 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.) .
