Frederic William Goudy (1865 – 1947) was an American printer, artist and type designer whose typefaces include Copperplate Gothic, Goudy Old Style and Kennerley. He was one of the most prolific of American type designers and his self-named type continues to be one of the most popular in America. "Rip Van Winkle" is a short story by the American author Washington Irving, first published in 1819. It follows a Dutch-American villager in colonial America named Rip Van Winkle who meets mysterious Dutchmen, imbibes their liquor and falls asleep in the Catskill Mountains. He awakes 20 years later to a very changed world, having missed the American Revolution.

Synopsis

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow first appeared in a story collection by Irving called  The Sketch-Book Of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. This first classic collection of American short stories also featured the popular Rip Van Winkle . The fantastical portions of Irving's works were inspired not only by his travels around Europe and hearing old folk tales and mythology, but also by a visit to upstate New York in the Catskill Mountains as a youth. His exposure to the old Dutch customs and ghost stories around Tarrytown, New York planted the seeds for his Headless Horseman character.
