About This Item
London: Secker and Warburg, 1954. A first edition, first printing, published by Secker and Warburg in 1954. A very good book with internals free from inscriptions, the text block with slight spotting and browning on top edge, with very slight bumping to the head and foot of the spine. Internal spotting to the front paste down and front free end paper, similarly to the rear. In a very good clipped dust wrapper with some tears and chipping to knuckles of front panel folds, tears and chipping to the head and foot of the spine with small hole at the head of the spine and some slight internal staining, some chipping to the knuckles of folds on rear panel. The dust wrapper executed beautifully by John Minton. Riot is a gripping historical novel set during the infamous New York City draft riots of 1863. Amidst the backdrop of Civil War tensions and anti-conscription fervour, protagonist Jamie O'Connor, an Irish immigrant, finds himself embroiled in the chaos and violence of the riots. As the city erupts into turmoil, Jamie must navigate the dangerous streets while grappling with questions of loyalty, identity and survival. Wyllie's vivid portrayal captures the intensity and brutality of one of America's most tumultuous periods.
