About This Item

Barcelona: Comissariat de Propaganda de la Generalitat de Catalunya, 1937. Small folio (36 x 26 cm). Original illustrated wrappers; unpaginated (each issue circa 40-60 pp.). Light soiling and foxing, minor abrasions, pages of first issue coming loose from staples, overall very good. A complete run of four issues in three of the scarce and short-lived Catalan serial published during the height of the Spanish Civil War by the Commisariat de Propaganda de la Generalitat de Catalunya. Under the editorial direction of Pere Catala-Pic, the journal published articles promoting Catalan culture and the international struggle against Fascisms, as well as documented the impact of the civil war on the region. Included in the three fascicules is material by noted cultural figures on the state of the arts, the press, libraries, rural education, propaganda efforts, refugees, and other timely topics. The issues are also heavily illustrated throughout, with images from photographs, photomontages, and reproductions of drawings.

Included among the contributors are the writers Benjamin Péret and Elie Faure, artists Antoni Clavé, Joaquim Serra, Sem, and Francesc Domingo, and photographers Margaret Michaelis, Josep Sala, and Gabriel Casas.

In Catala-Pic's article roughly translated as "Framework for New Propagands", the editor argues for the centrality of publicity, and by extension popular journals, to the economic and political work of the country during wartime.
