About This Item
London: Printed for A.Millar, 1758., 1758. 8vo. pp. 116. disbound. First Edition.
The failure of the expedition against the French Atlantic port of Rochefort in September 1757 during the Seven Years’ War led to the court-martial of commanding officer Sir John Mordaunt. Despite intense public pressure for a guilty verdict, Mordaunt was acquitted by the court which reasoned that the mission had been ill-conceived. The verdict infuriated George II and laid the blame for the abortive mission on Prime Minister William Pitt. Costing roughly a million pounds the expedition was likened by Henry Fox to "breaking windows with guineas".
