George Lightfoot Huyshe (1839-1874) narrates the story of the expedition led by Sir Garnet Wolseley to establish Canadian sovereignty over Manitoba and quell the Red River Rebellion. This book is less about the rebellion, however, than about the force of men who made the 1,200 mile journey. From Toronto to Thunder Bay was fairly simple but west of Lake Superior the journey became very difficult indeed. Huyshe writes of Fort Frances, Rainy River, the Lake of the Woods, the Winnipeg River, and Fort Garry in a tale filled with portaging, swamps, moquitoes, black flies, leeches, and cold tea.
