About This Item

London: Edward Moxon, 1856. Handsomely bound in full green morocco, the back ornately stamped in gilt decorations and lettering, the covers with lovely gilt decorations at corners, top edge gilt, marbled end pages, silk marker. Recently expertly restored, the front cover reattached, hinges and joints strengthened, new marbled end papers added. With original marbled end papers laid in indicating this book from the collection of noted art collector M.C.D. Borden, his bookplate front paste down lost to the restoration. Penciled notes on the original end paper note this book to be extra illustrated by 51 plates, including the RARE "unpublished etching of a bust of Shelley (p.236)". Known as "the Calico King" for his fabric printing empire, Borden's art collection included works by Frans Hals, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Constable, Gainsborough, J.M.W.Turner, Corot, Delacroix, &c. Book is Very Good, rear joint shows cracking but has been strengthened, spine faded from green to brown. A SCARCE and lovely copy with a distinguished provenance. . First Edition. Morocco. Very Good -/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
