About This Item
New Directions Publishing, 1991. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. A standout association copy, inscribed to McClures friend and sometimes editor-publisher Jack Shoemaker, a legend in the independent press world who has stuck with the Beats (in particular, Gary Snyder) from start to finish. On the title page: "For Jack, New moments & warm roars, xxx Michael." As the editor of Sand Dollar Books, Shoemaker published McClures The Book of Joanna and Hail Thee Who Play. As editor of North Point Press, he published McClures widely read memoir Scratching the Beat Surface. From the rear cover: "Rebel Lions, Michael McClures first book of poetry since the retrospective Selected poems (1985), spans a decade of profound personal change and poetic evolution of the author." In fine condition. Please inquire for photos.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
