About This Item

A GENUINE DATE-STAMPED 1909 1ST EDITION FROM THE PUBLISHER WITH 1000 EVER PRODUCED
THIS BOOK INCLUDES THE RAVEN, THE GOLD BUG, AND THE RUE MORGUE, PRINTED & BOUND IN MA. 1909.
A VERY RARE PRINTING AND THE ONLY ONE I CAN CURRENTLY LOCATE WITH THESE COVERS & SPINE

This beautiful 1909 edition includes three of Poe's most monumental works. Exceedingly scarce and the only one I can find listed at this time. Over 110 years ago, only 1000 of this edition were created; this is one of the surviving editions. Printed in Berkshire, Massachusetts, five years before the first world war of 1914, and remarkably well-preserved.

The Raven: The poem explores how grief can overcome a person's ability to live in the present and engage with society. Over the course of the poem, the speaker's inability to forget his lost love, Lenore, drives him to despair and madness.

The Rue Morgue: Poe himself stated in a letter that the theme of "The Rue Morgue" is the exercise of ingenuity when solving a mystery. The man who investigates the murder is not a real detective and instead studies the crime for his own amusement.

The Gold Bug: The plot follows William Legrand, who was bitten by a gold-colored bug. His servant Jupiter fears that Legrand is going insane and goes to Legrand's friend, an unnamed narrator, who agrees to visit his old friend.

The overall condition of this book is very good for being printed in the early portion of the 20th century; it does, however, have some regular wear and age associated with its antiquity. This includes some small scratches, rubbing, and soiling to the covers and spine. The interior pages are well-kept with some natural age-toning, and two pages have a darkened shadow of an old newspaper that was possibly laid in long ago. It's well over 100 years old, so, it is not perfect but has been well-kept.
