About This Item

Boston: Benj. R. Tucker, 1890. First American Edition. Octavo. Publisher's orange pictorial cloth; floral endpapers; [4],[i]-v,[5]-317pp; inserted portrait frontispiece. Mild rubbing to cloth at spine ends; few small spots where cloth is lifting on front and rear boards, still a nice, bright copy with firm joints and hinges, quite fresh internally. First American edition of Pyat's 1889 novel Le Chiffonier de Paris, adapted from his 1849 stage drama of the same title. A starkly naturalistic portrayal of the more squalid quarters of Paris, here translated and published by the American individualist anarchist Benjamin Tucker. POLLARD ("Benj. R. Tucker's Imprint" in Essays in Honor of William B. Todd, Austin: 1991) p.163.
