About This Item
Librairie De L. Hachette et Cie, 1868. First Edition. Leather Binding. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" Tall (thin). Slight starting to upper outer hinge of upper cover (at spine edge); slight rubbing and scuffing to covers (leather over boards; chiefly to edges); small chip to foredge of first preliminary leaf; slight internal browning and/or foxing (chiefly to edges and preliminaries). [6], 270 pages. Text in French. Notable and rarely encountered study of the French author by a 19th century compatriot; particularly interesting for the discussion of Menippian satire (a tradition which extends from the ancients through 'Gargantua', thence through 'Finnegans Wake' and hypermodern literature). Includes bibliographical references. Bound in half dark red morocco over dark brown marbled boards, gilt-stamped and decorated spine with partly raised bands, tan marbled endpapers, all edges trimmed and flecked red-brown.
