A stunning new (then 1987) work of fiction by the author of 'Kiss of the Spider Woman'. Manuel Puig is an Argentine novelist with an international reputation and has lived in exile since the mid-1970's.With his characteristic panache and originality, Puig, writing at the height of his powers, gives us a tour de force of paranoia and sexual obsession.
As the novel progresses he takes us deeper and deeper into the conscious and unconscious lives of a woman.Cunningly crafted,'Pubis Angelical' combines elements of the espionage and suspense thriller and science fiction,as it tells,by turns, two intricately related tales. It tells of a Viennese actress in the late 1930's,'the most beautiful woman in the world', married to a German weapons' manufacturer, who possesses a secret sought by spies from Russia,Germany, America . . . . and about Ana,a woman of the 1970's,convalescing in a hospital bed in Mexico City, a refugee from Argentina who is reflecting on her relationships with men. Which story is the projection of whose unconscious fantasy? Synopsis

Pubis Angelical is a 1979 novel by acclaimed Argentine novelist Manuel Puig. It is perhaps Puig's work most influenced by pop culture. This can be seen in the montage imitating narrative technique, soap opera and science fiction elements. Also like other Puig works, it deals with psychological and sexual issues. A film was released in 1981.
