About This Item
London, Paris, NY: Cassell, Petter & Galpin. FAIR book. Green cloth. VG text BUT: crudely repaired hinges.. (1878). REPRINT.. Hardcover. FAIR book. Undated, but intro references 1878 & the tipped in 3 page ALs dated 1878. Gilt & black stamped cover. 10"x8",408pp. . Note is to "Worthy friends, [of] Western Villa, North Park, Croydon". It's a chatty, personal note, He refers to Leigh Hunt's monograph "The Old Court Suburb", stating that is where his "worthy friends" live. He asks for the friend's views on spiritualism. He then refers to the work of "Maskelyne & Cooke". M&C were famous magicians who debunked many medium's, and similar types, claims of contacting the spirit world by duplicating their stunts. 70 years later Houdini used the same techniques to achieve the same ends. He seems to express doubt but maintains an open mind. He expresses an interest in seeing a "good seance" attended by "picked & unprofessional" people. The 11th EB calls this book his most read work, and says: "... full of perfectly genuine moral annd religious feeling, and contains many apt and striking expressions. By these qualities it appealed to a large and uncritical (a bit of a dig?) section of the public." Note is crisp and in an easily read hand. Wikipedia has more on Tupper, Hunt and M&C. .
