About This Item
Boston: Stratford, 1936. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Presumed first edition (no statments). Hardcover in blue linen cloth lettered in gilt. ii+ 201 pp. Fine, presentation stamp front free endpaper. In the scarce original dust jacket, generally fine, just a hint of sunning to the spine strip. Unusal Depression era book dealing with the agricrude alcohol industry that "..takes its rise in agricultural products and restores to the farmer the glory that is his desert...". The author, a consultant with Dow Chemical, examines natural chemical use in agriculture. specifically alcohol by-products and other organics and, with a rather evangelistic approach, praises it as a boon not only to the farm economy and farmer's well-being ('chemonomics") but as a replacement for fossil fuel use ("poison-spreading gasoline"). In additon to the scientific material, Hale expounds on the social and economic features of this agritude as a means for the farmer to take back independence from large industry and as "The End of Unemployment" as the penultimate chapter is titled.
