About This Item

Washington, DC: GPO, 1909. fair. 451, illus., figures, index, small tears in margin of a few pages, text has darkened, front board weak. Ink notations inside flyleaves, boards and spine worn, soiled, and scuffed. The Conference of Governors was held in the White House May 13-15, 1908, under the sponsorship of President Theodore Roosevelt. Gifford Pinchot, then Chief Forester of the U.S., was the primary mover of the conference, and a progressive conservationist. The Conference focussed on natural resources and their proper use. President Roosevelt delivered the opening address. Other speakers included Andrew Carnegie, John Hays Hammond, Elihu Root (Secretary of State), William Jennings Bryan, Charles E. Hughes (Governor of New York), and Samuel Gompers (President of the American Federation of Labor). The speeches emphasized both the nation's need to exploit renewable resources, and the differing situations of the various states, requiring different plans.
