About This Item

London, England: Longmans, Green & Co., , 1894. 3rd Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. London, 1894. Stated third edition. With a frontis. photo portrait of the King of Korea. Printed by Spottiswoode and Co., London. 9 x 5.75 inches. Dark navy blue buckram binding. To the front board a bright gilt-stamped Chinese symbol, and with fairly crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. Moderately bumped spine head and tail, and with gently bumped corners. Very small library call label at the base of the spine. Else a clean and fairly appealing binding. The text block is firmly bound in although it is cracked at p. 241. The book is slightly cocked. Attractively deckled page edges. With xx and 441 numbered pages, plus several pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. With 20 full-page B&W photo illustrations on semi-glossy stock, most with tissue guards. Also with text illustrations here and there. With a color fold-out map of China and Japan at the rear; a large crease but no tearing. Ex-library but the only such indications are a slip-card holder to the rear pastedown and the small spine label, else free of any library markings. The interior is quite clean. Faint age toning to the pages; no stains or underlining or age in evidence. Rated a Good Plus copy. Scarce in any condition. 3 lbs. weight. Published during the Meiji Restoration Era. George Nathaniel Curzon was a member of the Peerage, a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and a British Conservative statesman who served as Viceroy of India from 1899 to 1905. During the First World War, Curzon was Leader of the House of Lords and from December 1916 served in the small War Cabinet of Prime Minister David Lloyd George and in the War Policy Committee. He went on to serve as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs at the Foreign Office from 1919 to 1924. In his professional capacity he traveled and wrote extensively.

About Marc Sena Carrel

I deal principally in rare and fine books. I also sell antique prints, including Japanese ukiyo-e. I have eclectic and wide-ranging interests and my collection generally emphasizes art titles. Areas of book specialization include: Art, Architecture, Design, Antiques, Antiquities, Small Press/Fine Press. As for prints, I am chiefly interested in ukiyo-e, ornithologicals, iconography and churches. I have a small but choice selection of books and prints available for the discriminating collector/buyer. My goal is to establish and maintain a stock in trade of a few thousand fine books and a few hundred noteworthy prints.
