About This Item
Precious Bane by Mary Webb. 1938 first Modern Library edition (c/r 1926), 356 pages. Webb was a romance novelist and poet, and although the likes of Rebecca West and J.M. Barrie were fans, she wasn't recognized for her genius until after her death when reissues of her books became bestsellers. Precious Bane is set in Shopshire, , and the "precious bane" is the detriment of the pursuit of wealth.

"We are so small and helpless on the earth that is like a green rush cradle where mankind lies, looking up at the stars, but not knowing what they be."
